Start of the Sunrise Series

I have to admit that cycling pre dawn most mornings has changed me physically, spiritually and artistically. Some days not much happens other than it gradually get lighter but some days the sky and landscape come alive with color and motion for a few moments and then everything settles down into a normal day and light. It is crazy inspiring to see that happen! I have been trying to first notice and second stop and photograph it. Sometimes it is so fleeting that it changes in the short time from breaking to getting my phone out to snap a shot. The next couple of paintings are the start of my sunrise series which I will continue as long as i am inspired (which will likely be quite some time!)

This one is Delta Neighbors. 24x12 oils on panel. Taken last winter from the then new Provo River Delta trail. GPS: 40.245167, -111.731822

Here is a WIP and the inspiration shot:

This next one is Sunrise on Epic. This is the one that got me started on my sunrise series. I was riding down a newly opened road by the Provo Epic sports park and stopped for this scene. I chose to be a little more expressive in the clouds and fields and love the way that it turned out. 24x12 oils on canvas. GPS: 40.219716, -111.701498

Here are a couple WIP shots and the inspiration:

Both of these pieces were on display in the Provo Covey Center for the Arts in 2025 in the Utah Valley Artist's Guild Spring Salon Show.
